Following a century and a half of forestry here, British Columbia's industrial-sized logging operators are struggling to find the trees needed to maintain the profits they've become accustomed to. The result is Big Timber leaning ever more heavily on provincial decision-makers to get access to areas of the public forests once thought off-limits. For the Spotted Owl, just one of a host of species endangered by habitat loss, the provincial government's reluctance to take a stand may make the difference between its survival or extirpation.

Listen. Hear.

Joe Foy is Co-Executive Director of the Wilderness Committee, an organization dedicated to, "preserving wildlife, defending parks, safeguarding public resources and fighting for a healthy climate." Joe leads the campaign team, and helps put together, coordinate and carry out strategies for its nature-protection campaigns.

Joe Foy in the first half.

And; while the numbers for July are not yet official, bets are that month's global mean temperature will too join June in breaking the mark as the hottest on record. According to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration, "global land and ocean surface temperature departure from average for June 2019 was the highest for the month of June in the 140-year NOAA global temperature dataset record."

In fact, nine of the ten hottest June's have occurred since 2010. Perhaps even more troubling though is the dearth of Antarctica's "ice extent", the smallest ever measured.

Dahr Jamail is a journalist and author who has, as staff writer at Truthout, been writing about climate change for the past decade or more. Dahr toured the island in early June with his book, 'The End of Ice: Bearing Witness and Finding Meaning in the Path of Climate Disruption

Dahr Jamail and finding a way of life in a time of climate disruption in the second half.

And; Victoria-based activist, and long-time Gorilla Radio contributor, Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour with the Left Coast Events Bulletin of some of the good things to be gotten up to in and around our town in the coming week. But first, Joe Foy and allowing the Spotted Owl's habitat be logged away.

MH 17 5 Years On: New Documentary Reveals Troubling Inconsistencies with the Official Narrative

MH17 EVIDENCE TAMPERING REVEALED BY MALAYSIA – FBI ATTEMPT TO SEIZE BLACK BOXES; DUTCH COVER-UP OF FORGED TELEPHONE TAPES; UKRAINIAN AIR FORCE HID RADAR RECORDS; CRASH SITE WITNESS TESTIMONY MISREPORTED

by John Helmer - Dances with Bears

July 22, 2019

A new documentary from Max van der Werff, the leading independent investigator of the Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 disaster, has revealed breakthrough evidence of tampering and forging of prosecution materials; suppression of Ukrainian Air Force radar tapes; and lying by the Dutch, Ukrainian, US and Australian governments.

An attempt by agents of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to take possession of the black boxes of the downed aircraft is also revealed by a Malaysian National Security Council official for the first time.

The sources of the breakthrough are Malaysian — Prime Minister of Malaysia Mohamad Mahathir; Colonel Mohamad Sakri, the officer in charge of the MH17 investigation for the Prime Minister’s Department and Malaysia’s National Security Council following the crash on July 17, 2014; and a forensic analysis by Malaysia’s OG IT Forensic Services of Ukrainian Secret Service (SBU) telephone tapes which Dutch prosecutors have announced as genuine.

The 298 casualties of MH17 included 192 Dutch; 44 Malaysians; 27 Australians; 15 Indonesians. The nationality counts vary because the airline manifest does not identify dual nationals of Australia, the UK, and the US.

The new film throws the full weight of the Malaysian Government, one of the five members of the Joint Investigation Team (JIT), against the published findings and the recent indictment of Russian suspects reported by the Dutch officials in charge of the JIT; in addition to Malaysia and The Netherlands, the members of the JIT are Australia, Ukraine and Belgium. Malaysia’s exclusion from the JIT at the outset, and Belgium’s inclusion (4 Belgian nationals were listed on the MH17 passenger manifest), have never been explained.

An Endless Procession of Dead in Gaza

The Ongoing Dread in Gaza: So Many Names, So Many Lives

by Kathy Kelly  - VCNV.org

July 23, 2019

“I felt shaky and uneasy all day, preparing for this talk” – Jehad Abusalim, a Palestinian from the territory of Gaza

Jehad Abusalim, a Palestinian now living in the United States, grew up Gaza. In Chicago last week, addressing activists committed to breaking the siege of Gaza, he held up a stack of 31 papers.

On each page were names of 1,254 Palestinians living in Gaza who had been killed in just one month of Israel’s “Operation Protective Edge” attacks five years ago.

“I felt shaky and uneasy all day preparing for this talk,” he told the group. He described his dismay when, looking through the list of names, he recognized one of a young man from his small town.

The day before going on the river, members
of the Freedom Flotilla for Gaza joined Voices
For Creative Nonviolence in a protest outside
of Boeing’s offices.

“He was always friendly to me,” Abusalim said. “I remember how he would greet me on the way to the mosque. His family and friends loved him, respected him.”

Passing: Rutger Hauer

THANK YOU RUTGER HAUER

by Captain Paul Watson - Sea Shepherd Conservation Society

July 24, 2019

In 1997 I was held in Dutch prison awaiting an extradition trial to Norway for sinking one of their illegal whaling ships the “Nybraena”. I was held for 120 days and received incredible support from the Dutch public and most notably from Rutger Hauer who twice visited me at Lelystad Prison. Rutger helped mobilize other celebrities and the Dutch court ruled to release me without extradition to Norway.

Rutger passed away today at the age of 75 and all of us with Sea Shepherd will miss him very much.

His support over the last 22 years gave us all strength and inspiration. When I returned from my 15 month exile at sea in 2013 Rutger along with James Costa hosted a dinner party in Hollywood to welcome me back.

In 2006 Rutger was on a movie set in Cape Town and took the time to take the entire crew of the Farley Mowat out for the evening for dinner and drinks.

When we needed him he was there for us and for the whales and other citizens of the sea. Always generous, always supportive and always with a smile.

He was a good friend. I sailed with him on a few weekends in Santa Monica Bay and shared stories and life experiences.

As an actor he was a legend. In Blade Runner he made the replicant he portrayed possess more humanity than the humans pursuing him. He played good guys, bad guys, a blind guy and of course will always be remembered as The Man of Orange, a legend in his native Netherlands and the world.

Rutger was a Shepherd for the Sea, a hero for the planet and a wonderful person.

This Week on GR

by C. L. Cook - Gorilla-Radio.com

July 25, 2019

When residents of the rural Kootenays community of Glade discovered surveying tape above the creek providing their water they got worried. Worried because they knew the tape belonged to Kalesnikoff Lumber Co, a local outfit planning to start logging in the watershed.

That was four years ago, and what followed for the small community is a legal struggle that has run all the way to British Columbia's Supreme Court.

Listen. Hear.

Heather McSwan and Barbarah Nicoll are active members representing the Glade Watershed Protection Society.

Heather McSwan and Barbarah Nicoll in the first half.

And; on July 17th, 2014, Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 crashed, shot from the sky over Ukraine. All 298 people aboard perished. Those on flight MH17 came from five countries, and in the aftermath of the disaster, the Joint Investigation Team, an international body comprising representatives was formed to investigate; but, politics has hampered the search for truth from the beginning.

Max van der Werff is an independent Dutch investigator and filmmaker who along with journalist, Yana Yerlashova formed Bonanza Media, and have produced the documentary film, 'MH17- Call for Justice', released last week.

Max van der Werff and demanding justice for the victims of MH17 five years after the fact in the second half.

And; Victoria-based activist and long-time Gorilla Radio contributor, Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour with the Left Coast Events Bulletin of some of the good things to be gotten up to in and around our town in the coming week. This Week on GR

by C. L. Cook - Gorilla-Radio.com

July 18, 2019

It was all going to be so good, the new man promised. He had a plan: No more would they bow to outsiders; no more allow nature be subsumed by industry; and no more would they be left to watch as the best of everything was taken. It would be a shining new day.

Thus Mexicans received Andrés Manuel López Obrador, or "AMLO" as he's colloquially known, into the presidency. But that was last year.

Caitlin Manning is an American filmmaker and active participant in the movements against patriarchy, racism and capitalism. She's currently working on Resistant Mexico, a series of films documenting resistance to neoliberal economic expansion, and retention of cultural modes, methods, and memory in Mexico.

Listen. Hear.

Caitlin's articles, and links to her films appear at CaitlinManningfilms.com, and at ROAR Magazine, where I found her article, 'AMLO in office: from megaprojects to militarization'.

Caitlin Manning in the first half.

And; last week Britain dispatched its navy to take into custody, at its still contentious Gibraltar sinecure on the Iberian peninsula, the Panamanian-flagged Iranian oil tanker Grace I. The Grace was, allegedly, Syria-bound when intercepted, something the UK says violates European Union sanctions. Iran denies it, but the bigger question bearing begging is, "Does the EU, America, or Britannia have the right to rule the waves?"

Christopher Black is a Toronto-based criminal lawyer specializing in international war crimes cases. He's also an executive member of the Canadian Peace Congress. Black's articles on international law, politics and World events appear at New Eastern Outlook among other places, where his latest, 'A League of Perpetual Peace: An Impossible Dream?' reveals the West's relentless chicanery that would, in its audacity, risk another global war.

Christopher Black and pyrates again off Barbary's Coast in the second half.

And; Victoria-based activist and long-time CFUV Radio contributor, Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour with the Left Coast Events Bulletin of some of the good things to be gotten up to in and around our town in the coming week. Savouring a Second Helping: America's Neo-Zionists Can't Wait for the End

The Untold Story of Christian Zionism’s Rise to Power in the United States

by Whitney Webb - MintPress News

July 12, 2019

Well before Theodore Herzl founded political Zionism and published The Jewish State, Christian Zionists in the United States and England were already seeking to direct and influence the foreign policy of both nations in service to a religious obsession end times prophecy.

The largest pro-Israel organization in the United States is not composed of Jews, but of Christian evangelicals, with a total membership of 7 million, more than 2 million more members than the entirety of the American Jewish community.

Members of this organization, Christians United for Israel (CUFI), met in Washington on Monday, attracting thousands of attendees and featuring speeches from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Secretary of State and former CIA Director Mike Pompeo, Vice President Mike Pence, and National Security Advisor John Bolton. CUFI’s leader, controversial evangelical preacher John Hagee, has met with President Donald Trump several times and was recently part of an exclusive White House meeting in March on the administration’s upcoming “peace plan” for Israel and Palestine.

CUFI is but one of many organizations throughout American history that have promoted the state of Israel and Zionism on the grounds that a Jewish ethnostate in Palestine is a requirement for the fulfillment of end-times prophecy and necessary for Jesus Christ to return to Earth — an event Christians often refer to as “the Second Coming.”

While organizations like CUFI and its predecessors have long seen the creation of the state of Israel in 1948, and the later Israeli victory and conquest of Jerusalem in 1967, as the fulfillment of Biblical prophecy, there is one prophecy that this sect of evangelical Christians believes is the only thing standing between them and the Second Coming. There are estimated to be more than 20 million of these Christians, often referred to as Christian Zionists, in the United States and they are a key voting bloc and source of political donations for the Republican Party.

As was explored in previous installments of this series, these Christian Zionists, much like religious Zionist extremists in Israel, believe that the Al Aqsa mosque and the Dome of the Rock must be replaced with a Third Jewish Temple in order to usher in the end times.

Clown v. Fool: Vying for Power in Great Britain

Idiots Driving the World to War

by Finian Cunningham - Sputnik

July 14, 2019

Like a person going up in an escalator while asserting they are going down, the British foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt has a bizarre way of trying to assure Iran that war is not on the cards. Hunt, who is vying to become Britain’s new prime minister, stated on camera that “he wants to de-escalate” the danger of a military confrontation with Iran over mounting tensions in the Persian Gulf.

That was only days after he vowed to dramatically increase Britain’s military spending and in particular, boost the country’s naval firepower – citing Iran as the main threat to British commercial shipping interests. It also follows news that London has ordered a second warship to patrol the Persian Gulf.

Earlier this week a British Royal Navy frigate reportedly challenged Iranian military vessels (three small boats) after they allegedly tried to impede a British oil tanker entering the narrow Strait of Hormuz. Iran vehemently denied any such interference by its boats and claimed that Britain and the US were engaging in a provocation.

Given that the Pentagon has announced plans to send an international coalition of warships to the Gulf “over the next two weeks”, under the guise of protecting commercial shipping from alleged Iranian threats, it must certainly look to Iran like the “war escalator” is speeding upwards.

Hunt has previously asserted that British forces would join in any American military attack on Iran. The resonance of past Anglo-American skullduggery against Iran is no doubt palpable to most Iranians.

Losing Ukraine: West's Hope for Ukrainian Wedding Dimming

NATO AND CHRYSTIA FREELAND HAVE LOST UKRAINIAN HEARTS & MINDS, NEW DUTCH GOVERNMENT VOTER POLLS SHOW

by John Helmer - Dances with Bears

July 11, 2019

Five years of civil war have convinced most Ukrainian voters to vote for peace by negotiation and compromise with the regional governments of Donetsk and Lugansk, and with Moscow. Support for continuing the war until the eastern regions capitulate has now shrunk to the western region of Ukraine around Lviv, and among those in Kiev living off the flow of cash from the US, Canada, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Even among them, the war party is a small minority – 28% in favour in the west; 16% in the centre; compared to 13% in the east and 8% in the south. Altogether, only one in six Ukrainians (17%) now wants to fight on. Peace at any price is favoured by one in five (20%); peace on compromise terms by 49%.

These are the new findings of countrywide surveys of Ukraine voters in June, commissioned and paid for by the Dutch Government. They confirm the results of a voter poll carried out in May for the US State Department.

So far no Canadian, British or American newspaper or think-tank has reported on the shift in Ukrainian voter sentiment, although the country will hold its Verkhovna Rada (parliament) election on July 21. Nor have the Russian media noticed.

Conducted by two Kiev-based polling groups, the Razumkov Centre and the Ilko Kucheriv Democratic Initiatives Foundation (DIF), a poll of voter intention and party preference was carried out between June 13 and 20. The sample included 2,017 respondents of voting age “in all regions of Ukraine, with the exception of the Crimea and the occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk Oblasts.” Sampling error is 2.3%. The results summary and tabulations were published in Ukrainian on June 26; click to read.

Left: Andrei Bychenko, chief pollster at the Razumkov Centre in Kiev;
in his public statements he is openly supportive of the EU and NATO goals for the war.
The Kiev Security Forum and Open Ukraine, for which Bychenko speaks, is funded by
NATO, the British Government, German and US foundations, and Victor Pinchuk.
Right: Olexiy Haran, head of research at the Democratic Initiatives Foundation.
He is outspokenly hostile towards Russia; his research is financed by George Soros,
as well as US and Ukrainian government outlets.

Razumkov Centre and the DIF report they were paid to carry out the poll by the Dutch Embassy in Kiev. The money came from a Dutch Foreign Ministry programme called MATRA; that says its aim is to promote Ukrainian government membership of the European Union, and protect Dutch company investment in Ukraine. As of October 2018, the Dutch investment aggregate was $6.5 billion, coming mainly from Royal Dutch Shell, ING Bank, Rabobank, Philips, Unilever, Louis Dreyfus Holding, and Akzo Nobel.

The most important finding is that President Volodymyr Zelensky’s party, Sluha Narodu (“Servant of the People”) is drawing more votes than all of its party rivals put together; 43% of those who say they will vote. Unless the election outcome is tampered with, Zelensky’s party will dominate the new parliament after the election on July 21. Another 11% of voters support the Opposition Platform party backed by Vladimir Medvedchuk and Dmitry Firtash, the most pro-Russian of Ukrainian politicians and oligarchs.

The also-rans drawing enough voters to reach the 5% threshold for representation in the proportional vote contest are former prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko’s Batkivshchyna (“Fatherland”) party with 10%; ex-President Petro Poroshenko’s European Solidarity party with 10%; and Holos (“Voice”), a party launched in May by the pop singer Svyatoslav Vakarchuk with 6% (right).

The same results were reported by US Government-paid pollsters in May and June. Read those here.

The Razumkov-DIF poll illustrates how party preference differs across the four regions of the country.

REGIONAL DISTRIBUTION OF UKRAINIAN VOTER PREFERENCES
(in percent)

Source: http://razumkov.org.ua/ Note that sampling error of 2.3% indicates
that a percentage of that amount or less is equivalent to zero support.

An important finding in the Dutch poll is that Vakarchuk’s party has no national appeal and is not drawing young voters, as Vakarchuk, his local promoters and US Government media claim. Instead, the party is based in the west while appearing to be a nationwide bid to draw young voters away from Zelensky, whose appeal started with his television comedies. According to the Razumkov breakdown of party preferences by age, just 8% of the 30-39 group and 6.5% of the 18-29 group support Vakarchuk. But the percentages are so small, there is no statistical difference across the age groups; the over-60 group registered 3.5% for Vakarchuk. The age spread among supporters of Zelensky is much clearer – for example, 57.4% in the 18-29 group.

At the same time as the Dutch Government paid Razumkov and DIF to survey Ukrainian intentions for the July 21 vote, the same sample was also asked questions about the outcomes they anticipate and the policies they prefer for ending the civil war. The Dutch titled the report of these results “the search for ways to restore Ukraine’s sovereignty over the occupied Donbas: public opinion on the eve of the parliamentary elections”. Read the English translation issued by DIF here.

Just how misleading the title was intended to be can be seen from the overwhelming rejection of the war policy of the US, Canada and the European Union, including the Dutch. Altogether, 69% of the Ukrainians polled want peace; almost half of them with whatever concessions will be necessary.

Questioned on nine specially worded options for the terms of peace negotiations, the undecideds jump to one in five, and there are significant differences between the political parties and the regions on what the preferred terms and favoured outcomes should be, and what options are unacceptable. The Dutch Government wording of the questions avoided the thirteen points of the Minsk Protocol signed in February 2015 by representatives of the Donetsk, Lugansk, Russian and Ukrainian governments; read the terms of Minsk-II here.

Not counting those who refused to say or claimed to be undecided, the clearest signs of nationwide consensus are for negotiating peace terms directly with the representatives of the Donetsk and Lugansk governments; ending the trade blockade and economic sanctions with the east; and deploying a United Nations peacekeeping force to ensure the peace.

We all know water means life; so why then do we treat it like dirt? Whether by using our streams and rivers as open sewers, or permitting construction and other industrial activities in watersheds, we've allowed clean, pure water, lifeblood of both ecosystems and human civilization become just something running freely from a tap. But this easy attitude toward that most essential element imperils us all.

June Ross is a community, political, and environmental activist. As well as a member of the Nanaimo River Watershed Roundtable, June serves as both Chair of the Vancouver Island Water Watch Coalition and editor of it's web page which, "seeks to unite, inform and educate communities on Vancouver Island on the status of water and wastewater affecting the environment and our way of life."

June Ross in the first half.

And; the embattled government of Venezuela was dealt an especially stinging blow last week; stinging because it didn't come from the United States, or one of its suspect coalitions of willing regime changers, but from UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet.

Listen. Hear.

The former leftist President of Chile made a number of controversial statements about both President Nicolás Maduro and his government in her report to the United Nations, most damning perhaps being allegations of mass killings of political opponents. The Commissioner's report is a boon to the foreign press, who've latched on to both embellish the findings, and further demonize Maduro.

Joe Emersberger is a Canada-based writer whose work, primarily focused on media distortion and confabulation, appears at FAIR.org, VenezuelAnalysis, The Canary, and Counterpunch.org.

Joe Emersberger and a “fundamentally flawed and disappointing” UN report on Venezuela in the second half.

Uncle Che 2.0And a Happy Fourth to our friends south. You know, the Greatest American, (besides the official title-holder, Ronald Reagan) once wrote of the founding of America,

"1492. As children we were taught to memorize this year with pride and joy as the year people began living full and imaginative lives on the continent of North America. Actually, people had been living full and imaginative lives on the continent of North America for hundreds of years before that. 1492 was simply the year sea pirates began to rob, cheat, and kill them."

Kurt Vonnegut's words are as true today as when he wrote them, sometime in the last century. But, the winds driving Big H "history" seldom blow in the direction of objective truth; which is why marginal chroniclers, or more properly, chroniclers of the marginalized, like Kurt Vonnegut, Mark Twain, and Howard Zinn are vital if we are to remember who we are and where we came from.

If, that is, we care to do so.

Listen. Hear.

Danny Haiphong is a journalist and regular contributor to Black Agenda Report. He's co-author with Roberto Servent of the new book, 'American Exceptionalism and American Innocence: A Peoples History of Fake News From the Revolutionary War to the War on Terror', the text of which no less a luminary than, Dr. Cornell West says, "lay bare the hidden realities and concealed miseries of poor and working peoples even as revolutionary fire remains strong!"

Danny Haiphong in the first half.

And; inspired by WikiLeaks, an American journalist and Argentine biologist founded EcoLeaks, an organization with the same goals and principles Julian Assange adopted for his groundbreaking efforts. And, it didn't take long for the upstart muckrakers to find trouble, taking on Argentina's frackers. Having beaten back harassment and bogus criminal charges in a fiasco court case litigants failed to show up for, it took good old-fashioned death threats to chase EcoLeaks from the fields of battle, Argentina's agricultural heartland.

Esteban Servat, is an environmental-activist refugee, running for his life for daring to serve biology in the second half.
