Gaza: Bearing the Weight of the Witness
by C. L. Cook
Below is a comment received by a Pacific Free Press reader who has an intimate connection to the abomination being conducted there by the Israeli military and explicitly supported by the United States of America, and at least implicitly supported by the Canadian government.

The video below, taken without sanction from Great Britain's Channel 4 television, but included here based on the public right to know the truth of the situation. As the letter writer reminds, the media are not fulfilling its duty to the truth, instead serving the interests of the powerful.

GAZA MASSACRE
Author: Brooke

Comment:
I am writing this letter as I can say I am more than concerned about the massacre that is taking place in Gaza. It seems the British and American media can not bring themselves for whatever reason to deliver the truth about this sickening war crime!

My husband is from Gaza Strip and is in constant contact with his entire family who remain in Gaza so I know first hand exactly what is happening there. Of course the media is in favour of Israel because they are the more powerful of the two fighting, a more powerful military force. Using by the way illegal cluster bombs within a civilian situation, they of course are fighting Hamas which are not by any means an army or a military equal to Israel. For me and anyone with a brain this is an incomparable situation which is justified with numbers suggesting that 10 Israeli lives can be compared to the loss of 600  Palestinian lives. Yes I am sure the people of Israel have some fears and some uneasiness with the rockets being fired by Hamas, which it is said this is the entire reason for the massacre on Gaza. Also of course the fact that Hamas broke the cease fire, which is another lie as CNN realised proof that Israel broke the peace in November. The thing that gets me the most other than the killing of innocent Palestinian civilians is the constant statement being made in the media “Israel has the right to defend itself” against what? People that have been kept prisoners in the biggest open air jail who again do NOT have a military equal to Israel! Surely the world can see if any one should be defending themselves it is the Palestinians wouldn’t you agree? Don’t they have the right to resist Occupation? Another word rarely heard in the media! Don’t they have the right to defend themselves? The amount of Palestinians killed so far just proves their resources of weaponry can not compete with a nuclear power like Israel. Then that brings me back [to] "Why does Israel feel threatened?"

Why do they have the right to feel threatened? Why do they have the right to exist? They have committed a number of outrages crimes against humanity on people who they have occupied and oppressed, taking away from them the basic human rights of movement! Why is this allowed? Why aren’t these things ever mentioned. Surely this justifies the Palestinians rights to defend themselves they clearly have had no other rights for 60 years, and this is clearly the message I am seeing now, they don’t even have the right to defend themselves. They don’t have the right to live! They are dying and the world believes they deserve to die they don’t deserve sympathy they don’t deserve even the right to call themselves victims. Victims of war crime, victims of occupation, victims of dictatorship! You know they Israelis have made sure after all they have done after everyone can see the figures of lives lost on both side, they have still managed to be the victims, the continue to have the support of the world of America! The Israelis will never have the support of the people.

I know first hand they are not targeting “key sites of Hamas” I know this because, my brother in law who is a Palestinian and is in Gaza now working as a nurse, told us the Israeli tanks are not targeting they are firing randomly and to prove it he told me lots of the ammunition lands on dirt ground. I am telling you these things as fact you can take them for gospel, why do you thing the media are not allowed in now? Yes it is too dangerous but isn’t that what reporters do risk their lives for a good story? They are not allowed in because what the Israelis are doing is an extermination of people, human beings like me and you. You know my husband said to me people in Gaza do you think they are not normal because you see them shouting in the streets and acting aggressive or very emotional? People act like this when they are forced into desperate measure. I think 60 years of killing and occupation gives the Palestinians a right to not seem to be in the “real” world if you like, because their not are they? They are locked behind as wall 10 times as big as the Berlin wall. Don’t you think these people giving half the chance would just want to live a normal life, and have the luxury of worrying what they will have for tea, or trying to get that dream job.

I think it is very easy for us to see these images of death and dead babies, and mothers and fathers hearts being ripped out in front of you as they kiss their lifeless child for the last time. It is so easy for people to turn off and tell themselves they can’t make a difference, well I believe I can! The millions of protesters around the world believe they can! Some one in you position can make a significant difference! We need to stop this now! We need a cease fire! We need to free Palestine and give the people a normal life where they have a choice if they live or die! Not a life where civilians seeking refuge in a school are killed by a vicious and disgusting army who know for a fact that civilians are in there trying to survive, the Israeli army was told this place was for civilians but yet they still bombed it! Why?

The more and more this one sided war goes on, my feeling is that Israel don’t live by the rules of the world, they don’t listen when they are told to stop. They are savages and need to be stopped and removed from Palestine. Is a cease fire really enough at this point? I don’t think so, that is no compensation for what the Palestinians have lost, and are still losing and will continue to loose until Israel is remove and Palestine is returned to the Palestinians. Now I am not Palestinian I am a British citizen and have made up my own mind about this due to what I have witnessed over the past week. I feel sick and horrified that no one absolutely no one has stepped in to truly help, vulnerable and defenseless people. This needs to be finished now! Since I have written this letter another 30  people have died in Gaza.
