With less than two months to wait for Barak Obama's appointment with history, Americans hoping to change the course of the nation's foreign and domestic policies are mobilizing with the hope of influencing the incoming administration. Though many took Obama's campaign theme of "hope" and "change" as a reference to ending the war in Iraq, and reestablishing the kind of social justice at home embodied by past democrats like FDR and John Kennedy, there is very little substantive evidence behind the rhetoric to justify those assumptions. Dave Lindorff is an award-winning investigative reporter, author, and regular columnist for the on-line sites, CounterPunch, Extra!, and Salon.com, among others. He's worked as a journalist for more than three decades from Philadelphia to Hong Kong, Los Angeles to Taiwan, writing for a broad range of newspapers and magazines. His book titles include: 'This Can't be Happening! Resisting the Disintegration of American Democracy,' 'Marketplace Medicine: The Rise of the For Profit Hospital Chains,' and 'Killing Time: An Investigation into the Death Row Case of Mumia Abu-Jamal.' His latest book, 'The Case for the Impeachment: Legal Arguments for Removing George W. Bush from Office' is co-written with constitutional lawyer, Barbara Olshansky. Dave Lindorff in the first half.
And; Vancouver Island has the dubious distinction of being almost entirely dependant on imported food for its survival. Years of urban sprawl has reduced our already sparce arable land parcels, while successive provincial Liberal governments assail the meagre protection from development offered by the Agricultural Land Reserve, or ALR. Today, more than 90% of the food consumed in Victoria and throughout the island is shipped here from somewhere else. Rainey Hopewell and Margot Johnston are two Victoria native plant permaculture gardeners and food security advocates. They are behind the Haultain Commons, a celebrated agricultural effort near the corner of Haultain and Asquith Streets, on the border of Fernwood. They represent a growing realization our societal paradigm must change. Rainey Hopewell and Margot Johnston and the "three minute-diet" in the second segment.
And; Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with some of the good goings-on in and around Victoria in the coming week. But first, Dave Lindorff and...Oh yeah...Remembering the War and Other National and Global Crises.
