Flagging British Columbia's "Green" Premier
written by Chris Cook
Flagging British Columbia's "Green" Premier

Eco-Activist Ingmar Lee climbs flag pole at BC Legislature Having long ago grown weary of corporate control of political and social processes, long time environmentalist Ingmar Lee decided to join the 100,000 strong peoples' conference in Copenhagen and express his concerns about the destruction of BC's wilderness.

Upon his release, Lee told Pacific Free Press;

"After being appalled and dismayed to see Canada shamed and embarrassed before the world by our prime minister and the premier of B.C.; and furthermore, the unbelievable issuance of a 'Green Leadership Award' to Gordon Campbell by Tzeporah Berman of ForestEthics, I felt compelled to point out to the people of Canada: Gordon Campbell is the champion of the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline scheme.

"This project, if it proceeds will deliver half of the Alberta Tar Sand's daily production to the B.C. coast via an eleven hundred kilometer, one-metre diameter pipeline, to Kitimat where it will be loaded onto as many three hundred very large crude carriers (VLCC's) per year, from where it will be delivered to the world's insatiable and planet-killing internal combustion engines. This is not a Green premier, and Gordon Campbell's project is a colossal crime against the planet."

Lee was arrested after hanging the banner by Victoria City Police and charged with mischief. The banner was quickly cut down by a local tree service.

Lee's protest today highlights the proposed Enbridge Pipeline, planned to carry oil products from the infamous Tar Sands in Alberta to be then shipped across the Pacific. He targets B.C. premier, Gordon Campbell, ironically the recipient last week in Copenhagen of a "Green" leadership award. Lee has led movements in B.C. to protect ancient forests, and protest the shipment of raw logs out of BC.

Today, December 19th, concerned citizen Ingmar Lee climbed the flagpole at the BC Legislature in an effort to draw attention to a planned oil pipeline.  The plans are to carve a path through the Great Bear Rainforest for a 1,170 km pipeline that will transport oil from Alberta to Kitimat BC where it will be shipped via supertanker along BC's ragged and eco-sensitive coastline.
