This Week on GR
by C. L. Cook
This week: As the strike of UVic's dismally paid SUB staff drags into its fifth week, a look at a rally held last week outside the now near moribund Student Union Building; Ingmar Lee on the second battle for Cathedral Grove; former soldier John McNamer trying to include Canada's cavalier handing over of Afghani prisoners to known torture states America and Afghanistan in an upcoming Military Police Complaints Commission probe.

Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, 104.3 cable, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca.  He also serves as a contributing editor to the web news site, www.pacificfreepress.com. Times once were, you could count on the young, or "student class," to support peace, labour, environment, and other issues often labelled, "progressive." But two recent issues here at the University of Victoria put that assumption to the lie: The first was the victory of militarists to use the campus as a recruitment centre, and the second is the ongoing strike by workers for the UVic Student Society.

Last week, local unions, political figures, and students of UVic both past and present gathered in front of the Student Union Building to speechify in support of the Steel Workers Union employees of the UVSS in hopes of breaking the deadlock that sees the SUB shutdown entering now its fifth week. That is; nearly five weeks of a loss of services to the students, and a loss of revenues to the student society: Revenues the UVSS contends are for the betterment of the student body, and the greater community. CFUV's Winds of Change host, Janine Bandcroft went down to the demonstration, recorded the event, and has agreed to share her report with Gorilla Radio. It is the only time you'll here Janine's voice on the show, as her regular events features here will be disrupted in sympathy with the strikers. Janine Bandcroft and UVic's young eating their own in the first half.

And; we know the United States does not torture, because George W. Bush said so. On the strength of Mr. Bush's assertion, reiterated by his administration as represented by the U.S. military in the field, Canadian soldiers have been ordered to turn over Afghanis they capture to both American forces and their Afghani allies. President Hamid Karsai has also promised Canadian officials his administration does not condone torture. The fact Mr. Bush has proven over these last dismal years to be a congenital liar, and Mr. Karsai is no more the president of Afghanistan than I am the King of Spain seems not to matter much in Ottawa. But it may matter, should trials ever convene to hear evidence of Canada's official complicity in war crimes against Afghanistan and its citizens.

John McNamer is a decorated former soldier who has petitioned the forthcoming hearing of the Military Police Complaints Commission expand their probe into promises of safe-keeping and humane treatment of prisoners delivered into the hands of American and Afghani forces in Afghanistan. John McNamer and Canada's criminal complicity in the second half.

And; as mentioned, Janine Bandcroft will not be here to bring us up to speed with all the good goings-on in and around Victoria in the coming week, as she is refusing to cross the picket line here. You can check her site for those at: relativenewz.ca.
