Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion Leads Town Hall Meeting on the
Green Shift Plan and the Environment at UVic

Friday, September 12th, Mr. Dion will be will accompanied by local Vancouver Island Liberal candidates, Briony Penn (Saanich-Gulf Islands), Anne Park Shannon (Victoria) and Keith Martin (Equimalt –Juan de Fuca).

Federal Liberal Leader and Leader of the Opposition Stéphane Dion will be hosting a town hall meeting on his party’s Green Shift Plan and other environmental policy.

Prominent members of the scientific and environmental community including Dr. Andrew Weaver, David R. Boyd and Guy Dauncey (biographies attached) will also be in attendance. Introductions and an overview of party policy will be followed by a
Q & A session with the audience.
 

Biographies of Special Guests

Dr. Andrew Weaver, School of Earth & Ocean Sciences, UVic
Dr. Andrew Weaver is a Professor and Canada Research Chair in Atmospheric Science in the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences at UVic. His contribution to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change jointly won him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 with Al Gore. He joined UVic in 1992, having spent three years as a natural sciences and engineering research council university research fellow in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences at McGill University. He has written over 120 peer reviewed papers in climate, meteorology, oceanography, earth science, policy and education journals. He was involved as a lead author in the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change second and third scientific assessments of climate change.
 
Weaver presently serves on the United Nations World Climate Research Program Working Group on Coupled Modeling, and the United States National Academy of Sciences Climate Research Committee as well as the NAS Panel on Climate Feedbacks. He is co-chair of the UN WCRP CLIVAR-PAGES Intersection Panel and is an editor of the Journal of Climate.
 
Guy Dauncey is a speaker, author, and organizer who works to develop a positive vision of a sustainable future, and to translate that vision into action. He is author of the award-winning book Stormy Weather: 101 Solutions to Global Climate Change; Cancer: 101 Solutions to a Preventable Epidemic, and 9 other titles. He is President of the BC Sustainable Energy Association, Executive Director of The Solutions Project; and Publisher of EcoNews, a monthly newsletter that promotes the vision of a sustainable Vancouver Island. David R. Boyd, environmental lawyer and author. David R. Boyd is one of Canada’s leading environmental lawyers and an expert in the field of human health and the environment. He is a Trudeau Scholar at the University of British Columbia, an Adjunct Professor at Simon Fraser University, and a Research Associate at the University of Victoria. Boyd has advised the governments of both Canada and Sweden on environmental issues. Boyd is also a co-author of David Suzuki’s Green Guide, the author of Sustainability Within a Generation: A New Vision for Canada (endorsed by Prime Minister Paul Martin while he was in office) and the award-winning Unnatural Law: Rethinking Canadian Environmental Law and Policy. His essays appear regularly in The Globe and Mail and other Canadian newspapers.
