Welcome to Gorilla Radio's last broadcast of the year. Yes, the
calendar says it's only August, but time is marked differently here at
the University of Victoria. Next week marks the beginning of another
school year, and it also marks my tenth anniversary with CFUV, your
campus/community radio station. As milestones go, there are none better
than round numbers. So I'll spend the first segment of the show today
looking at where we are in Canada as the Fall of 2008 approaches, and
where the current course of our nation promises to lead both we as
individuals and Canadian society.
And; diabetes is moving towards pandemic status in North America. It is afflicting more, and ever younger Canadians. So-called "adult onset," or Type II diabetes is the growing at an alarming rate, and what this debilitating disease means for young Canadians just entering the work force, or preparing for secondary education is an especially cogent issue.
The Diabetes Hope Foundation is one organization focusing its energies on youngsters coping with diabetes. For nearly a decade they have offered a post-secondary scholarship program for extraordinary students accomplishing both outstanding scholastic achievements, and demonstrating a successful commitment to a healthy lifestyle. Thomas van Heyningen is just such a person; the north islander is a recent recipient of a Diabetes Hope Foundation scholarship, and he'll join us in the second half.
And; Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with all that's good to do in and around Victoria in the coming week. But first, a year end look at where this Canada stands.
