So much of the news we see happening in the world today is not so
much new as merely the effects of old policies coming around to haunt
us again. This orbiting news phenomena is obvious to those who
remember, but can seem baffling to those afflicted with social amnesia,
or seeing these effects for the first time. A few months ago, the
United States Navy announced it was to reactiviate the Fourth Fleet, to
be deployed in the Caribbean and South Atlantic. The announcement was
received badly throughout Latin America, where memories of Gunboat
Diplomacy and decades of U.S. belligerence and interferrence in the
affairs of its southern neighbours are still fresh.
John Ross is an American journalist, poet and author who has lived in and reported from Mexico for more than three decades. Some of his many book titles include: 'The Annexation of Mexico: From the Aztecs to the IMF One Reporter's Journey Through History,' 'Mexico in Focus: A Guide to the People, Politics, and Culture,' the American Books Award winning, 'From the Roots: Indian Uprising in Chiapas.' His latest release is, 'Zapatista!: Making Another World Possible; Chronicles 2000-2006.' He recently published 'Fourth Fleet Steams South: Return of the Gunboat' an article about the announced deployment; John Ross in the first half.
And; last week, a video of the punitive shooting of a bound and blind-folded Palestinian protester in the town of Ni'ilin hit the internet. Within hours, the images circled the planet, receiving more than a million views. Reacting to global outrage, the Israeli government announced an investigation of the incident, promising to punish any wrong-doing, but these are hollow reassurances considering intensive on-going attacks against Palestinians across Gaza, the West Bank, and within Jerusalem.
Jon Elmer is a Canadian freelance photojournalist who has lived in and reported from Occupied Palestine. He publishes the website 'From Occupied Palestine.org, and features news at his site, JonElmer.com. Jon Elmer and the quickening erasure of Palestine in the second half.
And; Janine Bandcroft will again be missed, as she continues her travels across America; you can follow her progress at 'Cuba Journey.blogspot.com.'
But first; John Ross from Latin America, and the return of the Gunboat.
