It has been said often enough: Democracy cannot
be sustained without an informed polity. If we accept that premise, all
who favour the continuance, or institution of democracy, must support a
truthful media; a media free of the political vagaries of the day, and
the pressures brought to bear by monied interests that are both owners
of media and invested with actors whose activities are not necessarily
conducive to a greater public good. Capital "M" media is not a
monolith; it is not a machine. Media is made of people, regular human
beings that share the same concerns and suffer the same consequences as
we, their audience do. So why then do they "The Media" seem separate
from "We" the people?
Vincent Mosco is the Canada Research Chair in Communication and Society at Queen's University and an instructor in, among other topics, the social impacts of new technology. He's also the co-author, with Catherine McKercher, of the recently released book, 'The Laboring of Communication: Will Knowledge Workers of the World Unite?' Vincent Mosco in the first segment.
And; there it is: the scabrous lump on the crest of one of the Sooke Hills' spine, the 'Bear Mountain.' And, a contagious pustule it promises to prove yet for generations of Vancouver Islanders left to live with the consequences of the destruction of what survives of the natural world at both that sad and sorry Bear Mountain, and beyond to where a "bare mountain" approach to development threatens more of the same.
Zoe Blunt is an island-based, freelance journalist and activist who has been intimately involved with the Bear Mountain development story, and is uniquely qualified to detail some of the, becoming epic, urban land use issues the struggle outside Victoria represents.
Zoe Blunt in the second segment.
And; Janine Bandcroft will indeed be here, survived her ordeal behind Comrade Castro's Iron Curtain of silence, (Cuba) and reporting on all things remarkable within her current purview. Janine Bandcroft at the bottom of the hour. But first, Vincent Mosco and willing knowledge workers of the world unite.
