Local war resisters and their supporters will be holding a petition-drive and rally in Foreign Affairs Minister David Emerson's riding.Speakers will include War Resisters
living in Vancouver and Bill Siksay, Member of Parliament for
Burnaby—Douglas. Mr. Siksay points out that;
"The House of Commons has finally acted to support war resisters in Canada. Now it's up to the Conservatives to respect the advice of the House and put in place a program to land them. The government must also stop all deportation and removal action against war resisters immediately. Canadians support walking the talk on our opposition to Bush's war in Iraq. Justice demands we support a safe haven for war resisters."
Where: On the street at Main St. and 27th Ave in Vancouver
When: 1:00 PM, Saturday June 14th
The War Resisters Support Campaign is a broad-based
country-wide coalition of community, faith, labour and other
organizations and individuals who, along with the majority of
Canadians, believe Canada should provide refuge to U.S. soldiers who
refuse to fight in the illegal war in Iraq.
Thousands of American soldiers are refusing deployment or re-deployment to Iraq. Several hundred have come to Canada to avoid persecution in the U.S. On June 3rd, the House of Commons voted in favour of a program to allow these conscientious objectors and their families to stay in Canada and halt all deportation proceedings against them. It is now up to the Conservatives to implement this motion. On Saturday we will be in Foreign Minister David Emerson's riding to demand that the Stephen Harper Government respect the will of Canadians expressed in the vote by a majority of Parliament.
