TRYING TO CREATE MOHAWK-OKA CRISIS (by issuing illegal development permits on Haudenosaunee Territory)
by Kahentinetha Horn
The imperialist formula is: the colonial government issues illegal permits to developers and sell bonds. These are paper investments based on the theft of our land and resources which they use as collateral to borrow and raise money. The government expects future taxes from developments such as mining, condos, etc. The Indigenous owners defend our land.
The colonists go to their courts to get an injunction to remove us by force. Remember 1990 when Mohawks demonstrated peacefully against a golf course expansion and condo development in the Pines at Kanehsatake? Mayor Ouellette of the Parish of Oka, which sits on Mohawk land, had asked Quebec for an injunction to get us off our land so he could force the development through.
[dateline] Irresponsible: Brantford, Ontario Canada
On July 11th Quebec sent in heavily armed para-military
forces of the Surete du Quebec police. They opened fire on men, women
and little children. When they could not force through this illegal
development, Canada sent in the RCMP and then thousands of the fully
armored Royal 22nd Regiment, the Van Doos. The siege lasted 78
days.
The Mohawks, friends and allies
stood firm. The golf course was not expanded and never will be. The
whole debacle cost the taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars and
created social disruptions that still exist. The colonists found there
was nothing to negotiate. We own the land and always will.
Brantford
has its own police force. The Brantford mayor, Mike Hancock, claims
they cant respond to public safety needs in the event of a
potential riot. Oka Mayor Ouellette said the same thing. In fact,
both attempt are to instigate violence. [Report of the Quebec Human
Rights Commission 1991].
Just like Oka, Ontario judge G.E Taylor issued an interim
injunction on June 2, 2008. Like Ouellette, who started the whole
tragedy, and then left it to Quebec, Canada and the army to deal with,
the ignorant Brantford mayor says, Lets fight. If Im not there, so
start without me. Hancock jumped on a flight to Cuba where he is
sitting on the beach. Or is he making arrangements to try to send us
to Gitmo?
Now the army can come in at a moments notice.
The judge better know what hes in for. Who has authority? Its the
Haitian-Against-the-Nation Governor General, Michaelle Jean, who is
the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces.
Whats the fight
about? We are demonstrating at illegal construction sites on our
land. Brantford is desperate because theyve borrowed money against
the illegal permits theyve issued to the developers. The interest
repayments to the banks are accruing. Brantford is panicking. They
are on the hook for the interest that will begin to accrue on the
municipal bonds. If they cant pay it, they will have to raise the
taxes of their residents. Thats why the army is coming in.
This sounds like a classic scam on the Canadian public.
Its called Blame the Indians and charge the
taxpayers. The Brantford squatters also want $110 million in
damages to pay for their destruction of our land. They think they
need to muzzle us so we cant complain about their illegal
activities.
- "Tension in the city is increasing because of the continued demonstrations.
It looks like Brantford hopes
to instigate a physical confrontation or, even better, a riot, so they
can git us! Were beginning to think its a set up, just like Oka!
150
heavily armed Brantford police say they cannot "protect the public
from unarmed peaceful Indigenous people. So if the city starts a
full-scale riot soon they can get their developments going.
John Brown, the city mis-manager, has been asking land owners and workers to vacate their properties if they see an Indigenous person approaching. Do we have to now cover our faces to go into Brantford?
Progressive Conservative leader John Tory praised Brantford for taking such a fascist approach to keep us quiet! He hopes the army will scare us. He calls it carrying out the rule of law.
The land was illegally taken. So he must mean the protection
of the colonial theft.
Michael Bruder, a Hamilton ambulance chaser [lawyer] who
works for several developers says, "If Brantford is successful
[in threatening the Indians into submission], other communities will be doing the same thing. Dont forget, Mike, brute force didnt work in for Oka!
Bruder whined on that the Haudenosaunee Development Institute, HDI, was set up by Aaron Detlor, another white ambulance chaser, to oversee building projects on Indian land.
Developers have to pay a fee and sign an agreement that the
land belongs to the natives. Why, Aaron? Everybody knows
its ours already.
Some developers say, Couldn't I just pay the money? It would be cheaper. Bruder says. It's not just about the money." By
registering title over to HDI, the colonists acknowledge the true
ownership of the Six Nations and they will lose jurisdiction.
They cant have that. They want to make their theft permanent.
Councillor James Calnan, acting mayor, says the city does not
want to take legal action against the land owners because theyd
lose. Thats why theyre using goon tactics on us.
By calling in the army they are recognizing that we, the Haudenosaunee, are a foreign state. "This bold [imperialist]
step wasnt considered lightly. You bet! Their helping themselves to our property has come to an end. Calnan implied
that by calling the army, We hope to scare them injuns half to
death! As if!
Calnan said in effect, "If we can get a disturbance going, we want our boys to be able to deal with it. They have a big array of new war toys like guns, bombs, bazookas, guided missiles, UAV drones, tear gas, detention centers, torture chambers [Gitmo North] and, of course, killing. Calnan says, It would be irresponsible of a city not to prepare otherwise." This is urban warfare! The city war machine is in place and theyd like to try
to practice on the Injuns! We seem to be entering a new wave
of high tech repression.
Bruder said Brantford and Six Nations have a long history of friendship. That is, until the Indians started to complain about
the highway robbery of our land and rights. Were not good neighbors now because we wont take their st anymore.
The city injunction application will be heard this morning June 3rd
by a federally appointed superior court judge, to be posted by a
sheriff at all development sites. Should our people complain
about their law breaking, the mayor will tell the judge that we are
in contempt of their colonial order. The judge will issue an arrest warrant. The police will call in the army which will arrest us. Head demonstrator, 66 year-old great-grandmother, Ruby Montour, laughed, Put me in a bright pink jail cell, will ya!
Brantford police reports to the city, which operates under a board
of local and provincial representatives. So here we have a biased
police force, judge, city council, developers, Ontario and Ottawa
ganging up on us to continue the genocide and geocide of our
people and our land. Brantford wants to keep trying to build it
dung hole on the blood of Indians.

I personally believe it is irresponsible of the government not to indicate to persons if the land they purchase is under dispute or not. It is my understanding that they are not doing so.
From the little history I can find on the internet it seems clear that the Crown has not handled this correctly. I have read two different versions that the land was suppose to be a) sold or b) leased by the Crown on behalf of the Native people and the funds to go into some fund. If there is land that has been sold or leased where then Native people have not received compensation for, then there is no question to the claim in my mind.
As an average Joe here are the current questions I have. Anyone wanting to answer them would be great.
Is the claim for all of Brantford or just certain areas?
Are all the existing homes in Brantford subject to the land claims?
Are the Native people looking for the land back or the value of the land the Crown should have given them?
Either way from the current facts that I can find I would be willing to move or pay the Native people. At the govern ments expense of course. And yes I know that the governments expsense would be the tax payers.
