This Week on GR
by C. L. Cook
This week: Kevin Neish on the Fernwood Community Association's long struggle with City Hall coming to a head; Janine Bandcroft brings us up to speed on good local goings-on in the coming week; and Songs for Mahmud: the music of David Rovics.
Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, 104.3 cable, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca. He also serves as a contributing editor to the web news site, www.pacificfreepress.com. Check out the GR blog at: http://GorillaRadioBlog.blogspot.com
In every community there are dedicated groups of citizens,
getting together to address environmental injustice, war, and the
local issues most effecting their everyday lives.
Small or larger, these
organizations invariable depend on the hours volunteers devote, most
often for little more than coffee, and the good offices of the
community they contribute so much to.
In an ideal world, the balance of
community weal and civic policy would complement, but in reality it is
not always easily reached. Recently the Fernword Community Association
received terse walking papers from the City of Victoria-held building
the organization calls home.
Last week, a packed out City Council
meeting saw the eviction notice retracted by the City on condition the
FCA stayed its announced Supreme Court Petition until an independent
arbitor hears both parties' positions.
Kevin Neish is a stalwart
community activist and internationalist, who first appeared on the show
from occupied Palestine in the early days of the so-called Second
Intifada. Kevin Neish and fighting street by street in Victoria's
community heart, Fernwood.
And; American balladeer David Rovics has a new independent release out, 'Songs for Mahmud' featured in the second half.
And;
Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour to bring us up
to speed with all that's good to do in and around the island in the
coming week. But first, Kevin Neish and uncertain days for the Fernwood
Community Association.
G-Radio is dedicated to social justice, the environment,
community, and providing a forum for people and issues not covered in
the corporate media.
