Pacific Free Press was launched in March 2007 by Dutch-Canadian Richard Kastelein of V.O.F. Expathos, in the Netherlands along with  Chris Cook - CFUV radio journalist and Editor in Chief of Pacific Free Press. Cook is based in , Victoria, British Columbia.

The site is a sister to Atlantic Free Press.

The mission of Pacific Free Press is simple: to dig out nuggets of truth from the slag-heap of lies, ignorance and witless diversion that has buried public discourse today. Pacific Free Press provides a new venue for disseminating hard news and insightful, fact-based analysis of the harsh realities too often ignored or distorted by the mainstream press.

The NAFTA Gaff Revisited: The Audacity of Hillary Clinton
by Jack Random
Imagine the smile that curled the lips of Senator Hillary Clinton when, on the eve of the Ohio and Texas primaries, she came across a story from the Canadian press that her opponent had delivered a duplicitous message on NAFTA to the Canadian government:  We are going to play some political games with NAFTA but don’t worry, we are not serious.

Clinton knew full well that it was in fact her people that had contacted the conservative, pro NAFTA, pro Free Trade government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper to deliver that same message:  We intend to play political games but it is only for show.  We will not act.  We will not renegotiate NAFTA to include the rights of labor.

JAZZMAN CHRONICLES - DISSEMINATE FREELY

Imagine the audacity of Hillary Clinton as she stepped to the microphones to deliver these words:

  • “If you come to Ohio and you …give speeches that are very critical of NAFTA…and then we find out that your chief economic advisor has gone to a foreign government and basically done the old wink-wink:  ‘Don’t pay attention, this just political rhetoric’ I think that raises some serious questions.”

Addressing the media, she issued a challenge:

  • “I would ask you to look at this story and substitute my name for Senator Obama’s and see what you would do with this story…  Just ask yourself [what you would do] if some of my advisors had been having private meetings with foreign governments.”

It turns out that Senator Clinton’s challenge was more than hypothetical.  It turns out that Ian Brodie, Prime Minister Harper’s Chief of Staff, revealed to a room full of Canadian reporters that someone in Clinton’s staff had contacted the government to assure them that the electoral promise to demand a renegotiation of NAFTA was nothing but political posturing.

(See “NAFTA Gate Began with Remark from Harper’s Chief of Staff” by Alexander Panetta, The Globe and Mail, March 6, 2008.)

Somehow, Canadian TV correspondent Tom Clark managed to reverse the story by replacing the name of Clinton with that of Obama just in time for the Ohio-Texas primaries.

For the first time in my life, I am beginning to feel a sense of animosity toward our neighbors to the north.  As the story unfolds, it appears that the Canadians have not only seen fit to interfere in our electoral process but they did so by delivering a deliberate deception at the most critical juncture of our primary process.

What appeared to be a devastating indictment of Barack Obama’s credibility on one of the most critical issues of the campaign was in fact an indictment of Hillary Clinton.

Now the word is that Prime Minister Harper will kill a proposed investigation into this incident.  If the Prime Minister is a praying man, he had better pray that his deception works for if Obama prevails despite him, this act of profound treachery will tax Obama’s ability to forgive and forget.

I believe that Obama can turn this unfortunate incident into a positive if he uses it to erase all doubt concerning his position on Fair Trade.  He needs to come down hard on the destructive policies of globalization and this is a golden opportunity to do so.

Nevertheless, the overriding lesson of this scandalous chain of events is that Hillary Clinton cannot be trusted.

With a straight face, she lied about her opposition to NAFTA.  With a straight face, she accused her opponent of betraying the American people when in fact it was her all along.

How can we believe her on Iraq?

How can we believe her on any issue of importance to the American people?

In her zeal and ambition to become the first woman president, she has become the same kind of lying, deceiving politician that has reigned in Washington for far too long.

Jazz.

The question becomes: will this story become the big story on MSM that that the misinformed story on Senator Obama did before Ohio? It MUST! These Rovian tactics - blame the other for what you are, in fact, doing - need not be part of our political future, and need not be part of our next Presidential Administration. PLEASE EXPOSE THIS SITUATION FOR WHAT IT IS.

Hillary Clinton is a fake phony poltician
written by Lani, March 07, 2008
The NAFTA issue did affect it, and she flat out lied. The Democratic party in Canada have been defending Obama, asking for the Prime Minister who is conservative to fire the person who spread the rumors. Don't you people know that the Clinton and Bush's are friends?? Come on!

Main Stream Media is behind Youtube
written by wa yne, March 07, 2008
This story has legs. It will turn viral on Youtube before MSM picks it up. CNN is aware of the story but they dont want to hurt their candidate. Obama needs to hold a press conference but i imagine they are getting all the facts together first and strategizing. Hillary just lost PA. This election will end on April 22nd. Obama will be our next President. Praise God.

Sick
written by RoseA, March 08, 2008
Hillary makes me sick. I didn't always feel this way. It has happened over the last few months of her filthy swamp of a campaign. If she gets the nomination, I could never vote for her. I can barely stand to even look at her. We have a candidate in Obama who uplifts us, who gives us hope, who inspires us to work with and for our government. We haven't had this in decades. This could change our country. And that lying, conniving, power mad, disgusting Hillary would take that away because she thinks it's her turn and she's got it coming to her, who are the voters to stand in the way. If she has to lie, cheat, steal, whatever, she'll do it. Shame on America if you're duped by this. You'll get what you deserve, just like you did these past seven years. Have you learned nothing?

Shame on Stephen Harper
written by Neil, March 08, 2008
As someone from Canada, I'd like to say that what Harper and his chief of staff did was shameful! This was the same Stephen Harper that cried foul when Michael Moore warned Canada not to elect the Conservatives in 2004. Harper's is a hypocritical scumbag. I bet he did it to help out his friends in the Republican Party and John McCain.

Hillary did NOT contact the Canadian government
written by Marty in Mpls, March 10, 2008
This 'news' article from an unnamed source is completely without merit. The aid it was attributed to says he doesn’t remember saying it and the Canadian government flatly denies it ever happened (the supposed Hillary call):

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-na-nafta8mar08,1,295847.story

Once more Obama denied that his staff talked with the Canadian government, and then said he didn’t know at the time, and then said NAFTA wasn’t discussed. So changing your story as more evidence comes to light is the ‘new’ politics?

Who Said What When?
written by cook, March 10, 2008
I'm not sure which "news article from an unnamed source..." you are referring to, Marty. But from the lips of Mr. Harper's number one apparatchik, the origin of this whole tale, the Globe and Mail, arguably Canada's number one newspaper, quotes Ian Brodie thus:

"That started, according to people familiar with the events, when Mr. Brodie made a remark to CTV reporters at the media lockup for the Feb. 26 budget. The Democratic contenders, he said, were not serious about renegotiating NAFTA, and Ms. Clinton's campaign even contacted Canadian diplomats to say so.

"CTV's Washington bureau chief, Tom Clark, reported the next day that it was Mr. Obama's campaign that spoke to Canadian diplomats about NAFTA, indicating the call to renegotiate was more politics than policy - but suggested Ms. Clinton's campaign made "indirect" contacts to reassure Canada.

"The subsequent leak of a memo, written by a Canadian diplomat and summarizing a conversation between Mr. Obama's economic adviser, Austan Goolsbee, and Canada's consul-general in Chicago, Georges Rioux, described Mr. Goolsbee as saying that campaign statements "should be viewed as more about political positioning than a clear articulation of policy plans."
