Protesters Ask Former Baptist Minister, “Who Would Jesus Bomb?”
by Mike Ferner
With 40 percent of Iowa’s Republican caucus voters expected to come from the ranks of conservative Christians, peace activists occupied Mike Huckabee’s campaign headquarters in Iowa’s capital city today with signs asking the former Baptist minister, “Who Would Jesus Bomb?”

Eight members of the Iowa Occupation Project and Voices for Creative Nonviolence arrived at Huckabee’s Locust St. campaign office early Monday afternoon, waiting for the former Arkansas governor’s reply to a letter delivered two months ago that sought his pledge to completely withdraw from Iraq within 100 days of assuming office; halt all military actions against Iraq and Iran; fund the rebuilding of Iraq as well as health, education and infrastructure needs in the U.S.; and “…the highest quality health care, education and jobs training benefits for veterans of our country’s Armed Services.”

Des Moines –  Brian Terrell, director of the Catholic Peace Ministry in Des Moines, said approximately 35 reporters, including a number of international journalists, were at Huckabee’s office during the protest.

Terrell said in addition to the “Who Would Jesus Bomb?” banner, the eight protesters held signs that read, “End Iraq War” and “No War with Iran,” sang the refrain from “Auld Lang Syne,” chanted ‘Who Would Jesus Bomb?’ and then read names of Iraqis and U.S. soldiers killed in the war.

Sgt. Vincent Valdez of the Des Moines Police Department said officers responded to an early afternoon complaint from the Huckabee Campaign office and arrested Robert Braam, Mona Shaw and Kathy Kelly, on charges of trespassing.  He said the three were among a group “holding signs, singing and reading aloud, basically making a disturbance.”  Valdez said the officers had no trouble making the arrests and the three were taken to the Polk County jail.

In a news release issued earlier by the Des Moines Catholic Worker, Kelly, co-director of VCNV, was quoted as saying, “We’re very respectful of the Iowa caucus process and the long history behind it but we feel quite strongly that the issues of this war must be inserted into the process of narrowing down the candidates for the presidential election.”

Huckabee spokesperson, Eric Woolson, could not be reached for comment after several attempts.

Rebuttal...
written by Eric Ricci, January 01, 2008
this little slogan, "who would jesus bomb" is stupid. Terrorists are evil and the War in Iraq may have been committed on shaky grounds, but guess what, we are there now. Hindsight is 20/20! Now that we are, if we leave, the region will fall into huge turmoil, the opposite of what it is now thanks to the successful U.S. Troop Surge! Bombings and violence down over 75% across the country? If the democrats had their way, i wonder how many innocent Iraqi's would be killed, A) under Saddam if we had not invaded, and B) under the extremists enemies of the free world, who would take over if we were to set a deadline and leave the iraqi government with no support! All i have to say is please argue politics and the war responsibly, not with immature slogans like, "who would jesus bomb"

ps: if youve ever read the bible, God smites many of the Israelites enemies, allowing great bloodshed. Oh and that whole flooding the world thing w/ Noah? Yeh that was like a big bomb...

thank before you write these things!

THREE ARRESTED AND DELAY HUCKABEE APPEARANCE AT DES MOINES CAMPAIGN HEADQUARTERS

DES MOINES--Three members of the SODaPOP (Seasons of Discontent: a Presidential Occupation Project) were arrested today in Governor Mike Huckabee's Campaign Headquarters in downtown Des Moines.

SODaPOP is an initiative organized by members of the Iowa Occupation Project and Voices for Creative Nonviolence. Members of the SODaPOP Campaign arrived at Huckabee's Locust St. campaign office early Monday afternoon, waiting for the former Arkansas governor's reply to a letter delivered two months ago that sought his pledge to completely withdraw from Iraq within 100 days of assuming office; halt all military actions against Iraq and Iran; fund the rebuilding of Iraq as well as health, education and infrastructure needs in the U.S.; and "…the highest quality health care, education and jobs training benefits for veterans of our country's Armed Services."

About 35 reporters, including a number of international journalists, were at Huckabee's office during the protest. In addition to a banner that read "Who Would Jesus Bomb?" protesters held signs that read, "End the Iraq War" and "No War with Iran." Protestors inside Huckabee headquarters sang "Auld Lang Syne," in remembrance of lives lost in the U.S. War on Terror, chanted "Who Would Jesus Bomb?" and read names of Iraqis and U.S. soldiers killed in the war. Participants also cited scriptures and teachings of Christ that called for ending war and making peace.

Sgt. Vincent Valdez of the Des Moines Police Department said officers responded to an early afternoon complaint from the Huckabee Campaign office and arrested Robert Braam, 51, Manhattan, IL, Mona Shaw, 56, Iowa City, IA, and Kathy Kelly, 55, Chicago, IL, on charges of trespassing. The three had refused to leave the Huckabee office until the Governor Huckabee agreed to their demands to end the war if he were elected president.

Governor Huckabee's schedule visit to his headquarters was delayed by about an hour while he waited in a Campaign Bus across the street. The Campaign Bus drove away temporarily while arrests were being made.

As they were being escorted from the headquarters by Des Moines Police, those arrested were surrounded by press as well as scores of gathering passersby who cheered them and included several members of Ron Paul Campaign. Ron Paul's headquarters are about a half block from Huckabee's. They were taken by police to the Polk County Jail where they were charged and released.

In a news release issued earlier by the Des Moines Catholic Worker, Kelly, co-director of VCNV, was quoted as saying, "We're very respectful of the Iowa caucus process and the long history behind it but we feel quite strongly that the issues of this war must be inserted into the process of narrowing down the candidates for the presidential election."

SODaPOP actions will continue through January 3, 2008. More information is available on the web at: http://www.desmoinescatholicwo...dapop.html

To Eric:
written by cook, January 01, 2008
Eric, you parrot FOX well. Firstly, you write: "...if we leave, the region will fall into huge turmoil, the opposite of what it is now thanks to the successful U.S. Troop Surge!"

Do you believe what is happening in Iraq today is anything less than "huge turmoil?" A few stats thrown out by the very same people who convinced you Saddam was "evil," connected to Osama and 9/11, and had "WMD's" now makes you believe things are fine now, thanks to the "surge?"

As for the democrats: You ask: "How many Iraqi's would be dead now if the illegal invasion and occupation hadn't happened?"

Under the Clinton administration's eight year watch, approximately half a million Iraqi children died prematurely due to the effects of the U.S.-led embargo campaign. That is according to UNICEF, and is a fact admitted by Donald Rumsfeld's predecessor, Madelaine Albright during an interview with Leslie Stahl on CBS's 'Sixty Minutes' news program. The latest estimates are: More than a million Iraqi's have been killed during Bush II's invasion and occupation, with more than four million driven out of the country, and millions more displaced within the country.

As for how many Iraqi's the "extremists" would have killed - again assuming the democrats, had taken power following the elections they won in 2000, and didn't follow the disastrous Bush course - I think it is safe to say Zero. Saddam Hussein, for all his wickedness, was a devoted foe of al Qaida, the creation of his enemy the United States of America, and their allies within the Pakistani intelligence service (ISI). There were no al Qaida in Iraq in March 2003, the month of the U.S. attack (again, an attack contrary to international law - let alone what the conscience of the Lamb would permit).

Hindsight, you say is 20/20. This is either wrong, in your case, or it is possible to see something perfectly (ie. 20/20) incorrectly.

And finally, gentle, Eric, the floods and fire and brimstone so profligate in the Bible is more a product of the Old Testament. It is those primitive Judaic beliefs Jesus came down to earth (as the story goes) to correct. He offered humanity another road; a way to depart the old "eye-for-an-eye" mentality that, as a subsequent angel arriving pointed out, "Makes the whole world blind."

Please, Eric follow your own advice before making political comment and t-h-i-n-k.

Question: Who would Jesus vote for?
written by Brad, January 01, 2008
Answer: Neither Huckabee nor Romney. Honestly, would Jesus ever condone bombing or torture?
