About

Pacific Free Press was launched in March 2007 by Dutch-Canadian Richard Kastelein of V.O.F. Expathos, in the Netherlands along with  Chris Cook - CFUV radio journalist and Editor in Chief of Pacific Free Press. Cook is based in , Victoria, British Columbia.

The site is a sister to Atlantic Free Press.

The mission of Pacific Free Press is simple: to dig out nuggets of truth from the slag-heap of lies, ignorance and witless diversion that has buried public discourse today. Pacific Free Press provides a new venue for disseminating hard news and insightful, fact-based analysis of the harsh realities too often ignored or distorted by the mainstream press.

Boycotting Wines from the Occupation
by Hanna Kawas
"'The land of Israel has been producing wines for 5,000 years', said Norman Gladstone, Principal of International Cellars Inc. 'In the last thirty years, the wine industry in Israel has adopted modern technology leading to higher quality wines which have burst onto the international scene. We are pleased and honoured to bring Israel's top wineries to British Columbia.'"

With these words, the news release issued by the Canada-Israel Committee on Dec 20, 2007 announced the introduction of these wines to the Canadian province of B.C.
This is an amazing rewrite of history since Israel did not exist 5000 years ago.  Nothing new for the Zionist movement that distorts the modern history of Palestine and its people - a movement that raised the slogan 100 years ago "A land without a people for a people without a land". I wonder how Mr. Gladstone can explain these 5,000 years of history in wine-making in this "land without a people"?

Following is a letter I sent to the British Columbia Liquor Distribution Branch regarding this matter and I encourage everyone to send letters of protest to the BCLDB.

Hanna Kawas

British Columbia Liquor Distribution Branch

Dear Sir/Madam:

It recently came to our attention that you are going to carry wines from several Israeli wineries, from the Galil Mountain Winery, the Golan Heights Winery and Dalton Winery.
see link here.

The Golan Heights Winery (of which the Galil Winery is a joint venture) produces wines from grapes grown on occupied Arab land and some of their wineries are located on occupied Syrian land in the Golan Heights.  All of this is in direct contravention of the Fourth Geneva Convention and stated Canadian laws.

To add insult to injury, you are displaying these products from occupied Arab territory under an Israeli banner, against all international norms and practices.  There is a reason your suppliers insisted on having the Israeli banner used, an issue that has already caused problems for European liquor boards, particularly Sweden, and you may not be aware you are being used to advance an illegal occupation and annexation of the Golan Heights.  The Israeli peace bloc Gush Shalom includes all the Golan Heights wines on their national boycott list of settlement products, under the heading "A Penny to the settlements is a Penny against Peace".

Regrettably, your actions are rewarding Israeli occupation, ethnic cleansing and war crimes that are committed daily by the Israeli Government against the Palestinian and other Arab peoples. It is also offensive to people all over the world who are interested in peace with justice in the Middle East.

Please consider our request to immediately stop carrying these Israeli wines, and do not repeat your historic mistake when you carried wines from the South African Apartheid regime.

Awaiting your reply

If Hanna Kawas is truly "interested in peace with justice in the Middle East," then she should stop the rhetoric of propaganda and start talking the language of peace.
Do the same Geneva convention and Canadian laws she mentions apply to the Palestinians as well?
Is it Kawas' intention to punish Israeli "war crimes" yet ignore Palestinian "war crimes"? Is that how she intends to bring peace and justice?
If so, then the Israeli boycott should be matched by an equivalent boycott of Palestinians, who are also guilty of war crimes (http://web.amnesty.org/library...of=ENG-ISR)

I believe that peace and justice will only come when both sides talk peace, not war, and talk of compromise and understanding, not boycotts and hate.

Not All Criminals Created Equal
written by cook, December 31, 2007
As the occupier, and vastly superior military and economic party, it is Israel that must compromise its position. So far, no Israeli leader has offered to give up any of the lands garnered through the wars of '67 and '73, and in fact have, and contiue to, expropriate the lands and resources of what remains of Gaza, the West Bank, and Jerusalem. This extra-colonialist push, as ever in defiance of international law, in concurrence with a war of aggression waged against neighbouring Lebanon, which itself witnessed a plethora of war crimes and crimes against humanity commited by the IDF, and especially its air wing.

Sure, peace needs willing partners, but it is ingenuous to assume an equality exists between the Palestinians, living under the boot of a violent, and unrepentant military occupation that allows immoral and illegal actions against the civilian population to continue with impunity, and the Israeli agents of that ongoing crime.

The above article speaks to the people of British Columbia and beyond, imploring they refuse to patronize a product that depends on the dispossession of one people, their lands and waters taken by force of arms, to profit the criminals gain further from the fruits of that land stolen.
