Gorilla Radio for Monday November 19th, 2007

his week on GR: Natural Resources and Environmental Studies graduate student, Dave Radies on saving the unique remnant giant cedars of British Columbia's interior zone; professor Jim Harding on uranium, Canada's Deadly Secret; and Janine Bandcroft brings us up to speed with good goings-on in and around Victoria in the coming week.

I t may give you some idea of the scope of British Columbia's magnificent natural heritage when, even after more than a century of intensive deforestation in this province, there still exist trees here older than anything, save the mountains.
Pre-dating Christ, the coastal cedars found here may be just remnant survivors of their long ago logged out family, but until recently, they were believed unique to the coastal zone. Last month, University of Northern B.C. Natural Resources and Environmental Studies graduate student, Dave Radies went to the media in hopes of protecting another area he discovered the colossal trees thriving; an area now threatened by logging.

Canada is one of the biggest suppliers of one of the world's most toxic industrial materials, uranium. Used primarily for nuclear power production, with the by-products of that fueling the nuclear weapons industry, recent years has seen some diversification of uranium applications. And, that diversificational spread of the industry is affecting greater and greater damage to the environment.
Jim Harding is an educator, former director of research for Prairie Justice Research at the University of Regina, and author of the books: 'After Iraq: War, Imperialism, and Democracy,' 'Social Policy and Social Justice,' and his latest, 'Canada's Deadly Secret.' He's also written numerous articles making aware Canadians of their complicity in nuclear weapons production and its attendant environmental damage, and will be in Victoria this week, here at UVic presenting, 'CANADA'S DEADLY SECRET: Uranium and the Global Nuclear System.
