5:00:00 3:00 Welcome to GR, etc. Don Siegelman's was a storied political career. A democrat in staunchly republican, and overwhelmingly Christian Alabama, Siegelman managed, before ascending the Governorship, to be elected to three of the next-highest offices in the state.
And, not unusually, he also managed to make a few enemies.
Because, as well as being a highly effective political campaigner, Don Siegelman was also an honest administrator, a trait going decidedly against the grain of George W. Bush's America, and it wasn't long before the Alabama democrat came to the attention of the Bush coterie.
Scott Horton is a New York-based attorney specializing in Human Rights law, and the law of Armed Conflict. He also serves as a consultant to the Human Rights First, Accountability for Military Contractors project. He's a co-founder of the American University in Central Asia, and is a current contributor to Harper's magazine, writing the on-line blog column, No Comment.
Scott Horton and the undoing of Don Siegelman in the first half.
And; the visit this past weekend of the commanders of the armed forces of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, or NATO reminds: Canada is currently involved in a war. Yet, you would be hard-pressed to prove that point, wandering the sunny, placid inner harbour among the late Summer's thinning throngs of tourists.
Warfare for we in what was called "the West" when NATO was born is not what it once was; it's now become a clean, almost antiseptic endeavour where not even television images of the heart-breaking, gut-wrenching apocalypse being visited upon the heads of the Iraqi, and Afghani people penetrate the calm of our North American idylls.
Few going about their business on a sunny Saturday afternoon too need be aware, within the stately walls of the Grand Pacific Hotel, beneath the gentile lobby, young men with machine guns and body armour prepared for protesters who may try to breach the barricade. But that's what the world has come to here; iceberg-like, most of what makes this post 9/11 society tick occurs beneath the surface, hidden from the light of public scrutiny.
I went down to the demonstration Saturday to ... well you know how the song goes.
Walking the protest walk in Victoria in the second half.
And; Janine Bandcroft will be here to bring us up to speed on all that's good to do in and around Victoria in the coming week. But first, Scott Horton and the strange case of the fallen governor, Don Siegelman.
5:03:00 22:00 Discussion w/ Scott Horton
"Welcome to the program, Scott. Besides yourself, I've seen very little coverage in the American media, even among the so-called left, of Don Siegelman's case. Why is this apparently grotesque mis-application of justice garnering so little notice down there?"

ELECTION FRAUD IN ALABAMA IS THE WORST IN THE NATION
HOPE Education Lottery campaign of 1999
In 1998 a GOP plan was orchestrated by Karl Rove and William Canary while Rove he was in Alabama running an election for William Pryor for Al. Attorney General. This plan was aimed at the newly elected governor Democratic Governor Don Siegelman. Rove used his influence with Jack Abramoff who was a lobbyist for the Mississippi Indians. The plan was to use scare tactics on the Mississippi Choctaw Indians making them think that if Alabama passed the Education Lottery that it would have a devastating effect of gambling in Mississippi. Abramoff conned several million dollars for himself and he had the Indians to make direct deposits to his sham organization “Faith & Family Alliance†whose front was Robin Vanderwall and the “Christian Coalition†under the direction of Executive Director Ralph Reed to laundry the money before it was sent to AL. to defeat the (1999) HOPE Lottery. Not a single person got investigated in Alabama by the ABI, the FBI, the AL. A.G. or the AL. U.S. Attorneys. Siegelman was left holding a $2,000,000 note that he had signed for to get the campaign started. They say that he is an excellent fund raiser and that he had managed to pay if off through fund raising. The last $500,000 thousand dollars was paid by HealthSouth whose CEO and founder Richard Scrushy was serving his forth term on the Alabama
Con Review Board.
Governor’s election 2002:
To help defeat the Democratic candidate, Jack Abramoff and Michael Scanlon (Riley’s aid when he was a congressman) persuaded the Choctaw to make a $500,000 donation to the Bob Riley’s campaign fund through the Republican Governors Association which laundered the money. Part of Riley’s agreement was to deny the AL. Poarch Indians a class 3 gambling license so that they would not be able to compete with the Mississippi Casinos..
Ballot Stuffing governor’s election 2002
Every article that I have read on the 2002 Governors election (between Don Siegelman and Bob Riley) says that the numbers published indicate that Electronic ballot stuffing was involved in Bay Minette, Baldwin County, AL. This is where a voting computer has have been accessed by a software device or perhaps a lap top computer and voters counts were changed.
Siegelman was the winner the night of the 2002 election by 7000 votes; however during the night, vote count was changed (no Democratic representatives were present or notified) the paper ballots was packaged and sealed by the AL. A.G. William Pryor (R ). To break the seal required a court order, said Pryor. All judges were Republican so the seal has not been broken. This too did not get investigated by the ABI, the FBI, the AL. AG or the U.S. Attorneys’ offices. Dan Gans was Riley’s chief of staff. He is known as a voting technology expert. He was quoted at a later date saying that his technical expertise allowed Riley to claim victory in the 2002 election.
Here we are with a presidential election next year and whoever accessed that computer and made those software counter changes and the method that they used has not been resolved. The Baldwin County Newspaper:"Baldwincountynow.com http://www.baldwincountynow.co...039407.txt wrote a really good article on July 20, 2007 called "The changing of the guards: Bay Minette, election night".
There was a staged KKK rally the night of the election that was made to look like the Democrats was the participants. I believe that the Democratic party was blackmailed by William Canary who had pictures taken in advance and ready to send to the news media. To this day the seal has not been broken and a public recount has not been made.
Election 2006
Karl Rove and his mentor William Canary (Riley’s campaign manager who was also the head of the Alabama Republican party) had a plan to eliminated Don Siegelman who was the Democratic candidate for Governor in 2006. Bush appointed Canary’s wife to the position of the U.S. Attorney in 2002 who felt that it was illegal for Richard Scrushy’s company to a Campaingn donation after Siegelman had reappointing Richard Scrushy to serve a fourth term on the State Hospital CON review Board. Since he has made a donation to retire the Education Lottery Campaign fund.was a ploy to detain Siegelman during the election; the trail dates were set to coincide with the governor’s election of 2006; however, Federal Judge Mark Everett Fuller sentence Siegelman to just over 7 years in Federal prision. Fuller was the chairman of a Republican congressman’s campaign committee until his federal nomination in 2002, and was also formerly a member of the Alabama Republican Executive Committee

"The largest U.S. Fraud In Over A Decade and The FBI and U.S. Attorneys Stay Clear of Alabama"
written by a guest, September 10, 2007
written by a guest, September 10, 2007
The new Mississippi Choctaw Chief in July 2007 said that the Choctaw Indians had paid a total of $13,000,000 to Kill the Alabama Education Lottery (1999) to defeat Gov. Siegelman by getting Riley elected governor and for Riley to oppress the AL. Poarch Indians so that they would not be a threat to the Mississippi Choctaw Indians.
$$$$$$$ Millions of dollars of illegal money came into Alabama and no one has been indicted or prosecuted by the AL. Attorney General, the Al. Bureau Of Investigations, the U.S. Attorneys, the FBI or by the AL. Ethic Commission???
Lobbyist Jack Abramoff and Michael Scanlon used scare tactics to con millions of dollars out of the Mississippi Choctaw Indians making them think that if AL. got its own lottery that they would lose the gambling money that came out of AL. and from the southeastern coastal states that drove across AL. to gamble in Mississippi.
Bush has banned Lady Justice from Alabama. The only person that has been prosecuted is the person who was the victim of the Rove/Abramoff's conspiracy, who was then governor of (1999-2002) AL. Don Siegelman (D).
To defeat the 1999 Siegelman's Education Lottery Campaign, these two cons set up several Fake Christian and family Coalitions/groups to act as a front and to laundry money. They got the then congressman Bob Riley to sign letters that they sent out to the AL. churches to oppose the education lottery in the name of Christianity. Riley says that he is innocent and has no remorse for publicly and financially ruining Siegelman.
Laura Canary (the U.S. Attorney who brought charges against Siegelman) was placed over the Class 3 Gambling committee by Riley which regulates the AL. Poarch Indians.
John McCain was the senate chairman over Indian Affairs who conducted the congressional investigation. In the election of 2002 J.A. and M.S. laundered hundred of thousands of dollars of Choctaw money through the Republicans Governors Assoc. Riley denied any wrong doing. The RGA told the McCain committee that it all came from individual donations??? Riley said that he is innocent.
It seems to me that the McCain Senate Committee, the prosecuting U.S. Attorney Hillman and the FBI stopped when the investigation of the biggest U.S. fraud in a decade got to the Alabama state line.
Bob Riley is being groomed for a vice president running mate in 2008. It will be interesting to see if he is McCain’s running mate??? Over the last few months the Republicans have really been pouring billions of dollars of government contracts, ear marks and education grants into Alabama trying to make AL. Gov. Riley look good.

Being literate is related to wealth. The higher a person's level of literacy, the higher their potential earnings. The conditions of wealth and literacy are highly correlated. Alabama has for years always ranked in the bottom 4 states as being illiterate. 26% of Alabama's adults are illiterate. Illiterate being defined as not having the ability to read.
Only 59% of Alabama’s children graduate from High School and out of those that graduate only 24% ever get the chance to start college.
Siegelman's plan was to implement a state education lottery that would fund free college scholarships to H.S. graduates. In 1999, he co-signed a note for $2,000,000 to get the campaign for the Education lottery started.
Thousands of Alabamians had made pledges saying that they wanted the HOPE lottery for their children; however, few came through after all the negative publicity. There were so many negative TV, radio and full page newspaper ads that few people kept their pledge. The campaign fund was left owing $500.000. HealthSouth made two donations to pay off the debt.
No one from Siegelman’s staff knew what happened until the McCain’s Senate Report (called High Five) dated June 2006 which documented the confessions of Jack Abramoff and his partner lobbyist Michael Scanlon. The two are serving time in Federal prisons. Although McCain’s Senate investigation proved that millions of dollars from the Choctaw Indians illegally came into AL. to kill Siegelman’s lottery campaign (1999) , to elect Bob Riley (2002 campaign against Siegelman) and to suppress the Alabama Poach Indians from being able to compete with the Mississippi Choctaw. No one was investigated or indicted in AL. by the U.S. attorneys or the AL. Attorney General, or the Alabama Ethics Commission???
The following comes from alabamapoverty.org
"Alabama’s poorest citizens paid more of their income in taxes during 2002 while the rich paid less. A report by the Institute of Taxation and Economic Policy reported that the lowest-paid 20% of non-elderly taxpayers in Alabama paid more than twice as much of their income in taxes in 2002 than did the highest paid one percent. Nationwide in the 1990s every state with an income tax except Alabama passed reforms to provide tax relief for low-income families" (Alabama Poverty Project).
According to 2001-2002 U.S. Census data, Alabama had the 7th highest poverty rate in America (679,000, or 15.2% of the state population, up from 14.6% during the previous two year period). Alabama’s median household income ranked 9th lowest. Region-wide the poverty rate was 13.8%.
(Poverty in the United States, 2002, U.S. Census Bureau)
Many Alabamians can't pass State Employment tests to get a job that pays more than minimum wage.
