"MY God doesn't let bad things happen to good people."

I actually heard someone make that announcement in a RESTAURANT, of all places. I don't know the person who said it or the people she was with. I don't know what sparked the outburst. But I DO know that the person who said it was dead serious, because she got up from the table and stormed out of the room. Didn't come back, either, thank God (ooops!).

I've heard that before, of course. We all have. I call it the concept of God as Santa Claus, and I expect it is uniquely American. It fits us so well, after all, and it explains a lot of what's happening. Think it through:

If God doesn't let bad things happen to good people, then bad things only happen to bad people. So why should "good people" help the bad people to whom bad things always happen? That explains the neo-con version of "welfare reform." Similarly, bad things are happening to people who live in Baghdad, which makes perfect sense. They wouldn't get shot and blown up if they weren't bad people. And why take care of disabled war veterans? If they were good people to whom bad things never happen, they would have survived the war without a scratch. Poor people? God hates them, too, so why should we help them?

You see where I'm going, of course. And it's no good hoping that the woman who announced her belief will get lung cancer and die, because sbe's a good person to whom bad things never happen. She will NEVER get sick and helpless and finally die. Instead, she'll be snatched up bodily and carried off to Heaven -- where she'll have a no-limit charge account at Macy's and a rich husband who looks just like Brad Pitt. God-as-Santa will make it so.

There's a reason all those megachurch dipshits love God so much, and I think I've just explained it. Please let me know if I'm wrong and why. - Jimmy Montague

Pure poetry !!

Jesus may not have existed or exist now but I can assure you that sometime very soon a lot of people in the Northern Hemisphere will be crying and screaming out His name to come and save them - it's happening in Iraq now except they are calling out for Allah. - Garden Bound
