This Week on GR
by C. L. Cook
This week: Worse though than those that would risk the living world out of ignorance, or for personal enrichment is a political process, our political process, displaying a single-minded determination to wreck the environment and all that dwell within it. Just such a case was revealed recently by naturalist, geographer, journalist, and author Briony Penn.

In an article appearing in Victoria's Focus Magazine, Penn exposes Ministry of Fisheries and Oceans, (those same that brought you Canada's East coast cod collapse not so many years ago) mismanagement of West coast herring quotas.

Briony Penn and putting a net around the Honourable James Ashfield, the minister supposedly responsible before it's too late in the first half.

And; Officially known as the 'Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness Action Plan' it's the final fruition of the long sought continentalist vision of "Fortress North America." It is what Canadian nationalists like David Orchard describe as the greatest existential threat Canada. It is an act of finishing through treachery what force of arms could not accomplish; conquest by deception.

Whither Canada under the 'Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness Action Plan' in the second half.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to bring us news from the city's streets and beyond. But first, the DFO caving to industry at the peril of our wild West coast ecosystem.

Chris Cook hosts Gorilla Radio, airing live every Monday, 5-6pm Pacific Time. In Victoria at 101.9FM, 104.3 cable, and on the internet at: http://cfuv.uvic.ca.  He also serves as a contributing editor to the web news site, http://www.pacificfreepress.com. We live in a time of unprecedented ecological challenge. As adaptive a species as we "higher primates" are, we cannot live extant from the environment. This obvious point it seems needs endless reiterating, as we see time and again the mindless destruction of that environment by individuals and organizations.

And; December 7th, 2011 may be remembered by future Canadians as "a date that will live in infamy," for like it's disastrous, seventy year-old predecessor still commemorated at Pearl Harbour it marks the occasion of a sneak attack.

Last Wednesday, minority-elected prime minister Harper, along with false hopester president Obama inked the euphemistically titled, "border action plan."

This plan, or plot more properly, is ostensibly designed to make you and the helpless wee ones of the nation safe from the marauding hordes of evil-doers intent on doing you bad. Thoughts on the 'Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness Action Plan'

December 7th, 2011 may be remembered by future Canadians as "a date that will live in infamy," for like it's disastrous, seventy year-old predecessor still commemorated at Pearl Harbour it marks the occasion of a sneak attack. Last Wednesday, minority-elected prime minister Harper, along with false hopester president Obama inked the euphemistically titled, "border action plan." This plan, or plot more properly, is ostensibly designed to make you and the helpless wee ones of the nation safe from the marauding hordes of evil-doers intent on doing you bad. Officially known as the 'Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness Action Plan' it's the final fruition of the long sought continentalist vision of "Fortress North America."

        It is what Canadian nationalists like David Orchard describe as the greatest existential threat Canada. It is an act of finishing through treachery what force of arms could not accomplish; conquest by deception. Of the deal, the Council of Canadians' Maude Barlow says;

        "The Harper government has again succumbed to U.S. pressure to beef up security and surveillance powers for little or no real security gains to either country. As we suspected, perimeter security just means that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will set most of the terms for greater information sharing, the use of no-fly lists, and joint policing of the border and beyond. Harper has also bent to the desires of North American business lobbies to remove regulatory burdens most of us understand as health and safety standards."

        And that is the rub: Using fear and insecurity, the traditional tools of blaggards and bullies, the disengenous p.m. and his imperial master plan to use this false promise to allow the corporate hordes, first and foremost in the form of agri-business giants, to prise open the nation's farms and fields to genetically engineered monstrosities, aptly called "Frankenfoods," while laying bare our grocery store shelves to dairy products bastardized by growth hormones known to cause disease and hasten death. These noxious foods, this egregious agreement allows, will be hidden from view by labelling obfuscation and point of origin obliteration.

        Of this "regulatory convergence," the Council asks: "Does it make sense to adopt U.S. style industry self-inspection of food processing plants? Do we automatically want to recognize in Canada the safety of new genetically modified crops or, in the case of salmon, GE animals? Do we want to stop testing pesticides approved for use in the U.S. just to get them to Canadian shelves quicker?

        The Harper government, as they prefer to be referred, speaking for all Canadians, offers little, saying it; "will continue to consult relevant stakeholders and Canadians on these issues." Relevance is the point here, as the Council of Canadians points out; Harper's pronouncements were directed at a very select group of "relevants" who apparently enjoyed special access. According to the CoC;

        "[O]nly business stakeholders were invited into the government lockup to brief media on the virtues of the plan. And only business stakeholders will have privileged access to ongoing Regulatory Cooperation Council working group sessions on Canada-U.S. standards convergence."

        That "Regulatory Cooperation Council" is to be the supra-Parliamentary actors now responsible for maintaining these unifying policies, "going forward" as they say.

        I posted the Council's concerns on this deal at my website, Pacific Free Press.com under the title, 'Bye, Bye Sovereignty: Council of Canadians rejects basis of border deal' on Saturday, and less than 24 hours later had more than ten thousand hits. It reveals to me a deep concern on the part of Canadians, a concern not currently being properly addressed in the nation's corporate or State media.

        As an addendum: the Canadian Wheat Board is also under attack. The Harper regime, (as I prefer to call it) has laboured long and hard, with its friends at the Christian-oriented and agri-business supported Grain Growers of Canada, to kill the CWB. This will put Canada's remaining independent farmers further at the mercy of transnational behemoths like Cargill and Monsanto, who between them already run an enormous share of the world's grain supplies. The Perimeter Security and Economic Competitiveness Action Plan, and its Regulatory Cooperation Council, in conjunction with the killing of the Canadian Wheat Board through an (illegal as it turns out) act of Parliament will then make the introduction of GMO wheat, something officially resisted in Canada for years (remember the Canola fiasco?) a slam dunk for Harper and Obama's friends in industry for 2012.

        Harper has promised to table Bill C-18 this Wednesday the 15th of December, (remember that date, infamy watchers!) despite a federal court ruling that his government is in violation of the Canadian Wheat Board Act, as it neglected to seek a plebiscite from farmers as mandated by law before introducing legislation. Talk about harmonization. It is imperative Canadians keep a vigilante watch on the Harper Government and its doings. It is imperative to make known to representatives of all parties, Canadians wish to maintain our national independence, as expressed in policy both foreign and domestic. It is vital we reject the American model, with its corporate dominance and militarism. To follow their course is to court certain disaster for our country. It's not too late to save this Canada.
