Mandatory minimum sentencing, something introduced in Ronald Reagan's America and widely credited for creating the massive prison populations in the United States, is something the Tories have consistently called for in a number of areas; it's the gold standard guarantee for investor profit.
 

The legislation must pass reading in the Canadian parliament, and though the conservatives are a minority government with no friends in the multi-party House of Commons, tepid opposition to the proposal could well see the draconian mandatory minimum trend continue in Canada.

As for press reaction, Canadian state broadcaster, CBC refers to the introduction of the new law as a "fortification" of the nation's immigration legislation.
