Earth Day is coming up, and as if to accentuate the point, Mother is restless: A quick succession of massive earthquakes, and now the Iclandic volcano eruption, that as well as proving an unprecedented disruption of air travel is hyper-melting the glacier it lays beneath. This Earth Day may also prove to be the single most important since observances began 40 years ago: Global Climate Change; species die-off; mega-polluting, and landscape altering power projects; and the ever-increasing human appetite for the stuff that may be rent from the body of our weary Mum all conspire to ecological disaster.

Marlo Raynolds is Executive Director of the Pembina Institute, and has worked with them for fifteen years. He holds a PhD in mechanical engineering and serves as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Sustainable Development with the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary. The Pembina Institute's mission statement says it; "...[E]nvisions a world in which our immediate and future needs are met in a manner that protects the earth's living systems; ensures clean air, land and water; prevents dangerous climate change, and provides for a safe and just global community." Marlo Raynolds in the first half.

And; "Who should care about the future of the university?" A fair question at a time of shrinking government budgets and an unprecedented broadening of the division between the classes in this country, Canada. It's also a question posed in Ian Angus' recently released book, 'Love the Questions: University Education and Enlightenment'.

Ian Angus is a philosopher, social critic, and professor of humanities at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver. He's also the author of the book, 'Emergent Publics: An Essay on Social Movements and Democracy'. Ian Angus, divining knowledge from information, and the university's role in the networked age in the second half.

And; Victoria Street Newz publisher and CFUV radio broadcaster, Janine Bandcroft will join us at the bottom of the hour to keep us current with Victoria's vibrant and burgeoning street community; but first, Marlo Raynolds and "advancing sustainable energy solutions through innovative research, education, consulting and advocacy" at the Pembina Institute.
