Kennedy Dead at 77

The Globe and Mail is reporting long-time U.S. senator and member of the storied Kennedy family, Ted has died. Kennedy fell ill last year, diagnosed with brain cancer. He survived a risky operation, and returned to the senate.
 
Despite the surgery, Kennedy succumbed to a brain tumour. The Kennedy family released a short statement in the early hours saying;
 
"We've lost the irreplaceable centre of our family and joyous light in our lives, but the inspiration of his faith, optimism, and perseverance will live on in our hearts forever,” the statement said. “We thank everyone who gave him care and support over this last year, and everyone who stood with him for so many years in his tireless march for progress toward justice, fairness and opportunity for all.”
 
Edward Kennedy was one of the longest serving in the Senate, being elected in 1962.
 
He was in the news last week, lobbying for changes to the law regarding the assumption of the senate seat in the event the death of a senator in office.
 
Kennedy was predeceased by brothers John F. and Robert F. Kennedy, both assassinated while in office.
 
His sister Eunice Kennedy Shriver died two weeks ago at the age of 88
